Is There a Sinister plot? Can our Facebook Postings Hurt Us?

The Sunday, February 5th New York Times' Sunday Review section includes two articles (see links below) that deal with the internet, social media and privacy. After reading them, summarize them and post your opinions in the blog. Be ready to share your views in class with your fellow students for extra credit points.

  1. I agree that facebook and other internet companies are taking advantage of these internet spying networks. i dont understand why the U.S is so reluctant to applying basic procections of privacy to internet users. I believe that the foundation of facebook, of advertising , of internet buisness has been courupted because greed. why do advertisers feel the need to apply this psudo-subliminal information spying on people? Where do these companies get the right to contact us, take our information and try to sell it back to us as a product? it is abserd, these companies are detached from humanity, individualiy and privacy, and they are not of the people.i believe there is an information crisis, not only because they may take our informantion but because they would try and do it secretly. There is a big difference between the reality of the bytes and bits and the reality we are alive in, where we live relativly short life times and dont want to be squezzed for every penny by the big companies and the big government. it is also clear that these days there is a threat to the stability of our economy. Its concerning when people would question why internet companies are paid billions for our information, rather than questioning why millions of children die each year from starvation. These children dont get to live fullfilled lives, but if there was a chance they had lived, than potentially they would also be targeted by the information scandle. Do you understand the irony? when one considers these questions then you can understand why i am against this internet policy.

  2. This information gold-digging is a scam. how much is my information exactly worth...zero! How much is the information of the millions that live in my city... Millions? The equation is an enigma, it is probably flawed, incorrect. What gets me depressed is that the scam is effecting our economy, big time. These companies: google, advertising companies, facebook;they are all preety much useless in big picture. They may have loads of money now, but does that reflect their activities in creating a healthy economy or does it reveal their greed. when companies as useless as facebook earn billions of dollars it tells me that there is a flaw in the nature of our economy. Basiclly the idea that the fat one stole all the candies. but us working class citizens dont fit into the picture, because we can make a living being on facebook all day. i say where is the money, and give it back to the schools where it belongs.
