Do Tehcnological Innovations Better Our Lives? Or Are They Just Fun?

The Sunday, January 30th New York Times' Business Section includes an article titled "Innovation is Doing Little for Incomes" (see link above and below) in which the author comments on the differences between technological innovations of 100 years ago and those of today. Read and summarize the article in the blog and give your opinions. Be ready to present before the class if you want to receive up to five points extra credit.

  1. This article seems to imply that we are looking at technology to be the savior of our economic problems.

    Technology gave us the ability to share. We can now share ideas, information, or physical things that we could not have done before the invention of the automobile, telephone, or computer. If you think about technology it is only used to make our life easier. That could be having a conversation across the world or actually going across the world. It has nothing to do with our economic problems.

    It was the politicians, corporations and the all mighty dollar that decided to use technology in a way that will hurt our economy. The U.S. taxes are so high it is cheaper to outsource to other countries. The only thing that technology has to do with this situation is that it gave us the ability to do so.

    The only thing technology is responsible for is allowing us to do more work with less people. The only way to fight that is to change from a dying career choice to growing one.
