What Is Going Wrong in Washington? Is it the Message?

The Sunday, October 24th New York Times' Opinion Section includes an article, "What Happened to Change We Can Believe In?" which addresses some of the problems facing the current administration. After reading the article and posting a summary and your opinion on the blog, be ready to discuss it in class.

  1. That was extremely interesting! This article is basically about the financial state of America at this moment and where the roots of the problem began and are continuing to be the problem. From the typical family losing their homes and people losing their jobs to huge corporate businesses going bankrupt, everyone in America is suffering for the lack of wisdom in the way the government has spent money and who it is they are relying on. The writer says that although Obama has saved car companies and was able to get 3.3 million jobs to open, there still needs to be true change in our government. So many people think this election coming up is going to save us and turn around our economy but most of the people voting don't even know what's going on. He also states how the Democratic party is basically favoring those who are already rich and showing favor towards people in government. He believes Obama has not done all that he has said he would do and it is because of him things aren't getting any better. Also, many people in charge of these corporate businesses are trying to get around things and run their business the wrong way and then they're the ones who walk away with all the money while the business is destroyed.
I feel like everyone is just looking for the next best thing and going along with the crowd instead of really finding out about each party and thinking of what is best for America. I think this country needs to go back to where its foundations were laid and stand for justice. Everything has gotten so warped and it's a result of government and the citizens not taking time to really look into what our country needs.

  2. From reading this article, I think that Obama and the White House administration is not doing much about anything because the fact of the matter is that big corporations, big banks, insurance companies and Wall Street bring in so much money that it does not seem that there is going to be much regulation. Not only are people suffering from this recession but the government is too. Many forget that America is still in debt so it seems like our administration is in the hands of the big businesses within it which is why those people filing for bankruptcy are walking away with millions, even billions of dollars. Obviously we are not going to get out of this recession in a year it is going to take a little time but from reading this the change that Obama was talking about is not really doing much. Yes he has been able to open jobs, but there are still thousands of people with no jobs. The change needs to start with the big corporations, banks, insurance companies and such.

  3. This article was very appealing in the aspect of Obama currently trying to change America. Obama said he was going to give us change and he did it alright, that's why most citizens in the U.S. are homeless and cant afford most of there expenses to raise their family. Just due to the fact that multi-billion dollar companies are only getting richer is the worst part. With the money spent on corporations like Chrysler for example he could have prevented homelessness for some families or kids dying from hunger that cant be fed.

  4. This article is very interesting considering that it is concerned with the econmy current situation. It bring forths the issues that are terrorizing the economy such as individuals losing their homes, the goverenment stealing money and individuals losing their jobs. In a sense Obama can not be blamed for the entire scandal because he didnt start the recession in the first place. He is simply trying to clean up the mess of another president. Many individuals do not see that change can not happen over night, so if obama is bullshitting(excuse my language) he will get called out eventually. Yes, he can call out the individuals that are taking money. That would show that he truly wants change but he must have the support of his democratic people that are on his team. Change Must Be Done..

  5. Business as usual, this article has summed up exactly what I've been thinking and saying for the longest while. Its highway robbery without punishment or any consequnces what so ever. I quess if you already have money and you steal more money its ok. Just to think that us, lets that word because 'taxpayers' might not be hitting the nerve, has fit the bill for the theft. Its like going to dinner with bill gate and paying the bill, huh. I dont thinks so. yet us, as americans have done nothing significant to show our outrage. we complain to each other, we frown to our neighbors over the fence but a key component is missing in our complaint and that is we are complaining to the wrong person. Of course the president is walking like he is on eggshell, which annoys me madly. Just as they had given the credit card companies enough time to implement hash new realities on us, by making there NEW GREAT OVERHAUL of the credit system take MONTHS to go in effect, it that same lay back, gentle attidude thats furiating his supports now. He didnt make the mess but is charged to clean it up apparently magic needs to be employed. Yes Mr Rich is right, the choice on the second should be clear but its unbelievably murky to those that are undecided.
