Is Immigration Good for the Economy?

The Sunday, October 31st New York Times has an article titled "How Immigrants Create More Job" that addresses some of the misconception regarding how the influx of immigrants impacts the economy. After reading the article and condensing it in the blog, state your views and be ready to discuss them in class.

This article discusses the positive relationship of immigrants expanding jobs as they increase in the country. Although certain individuals believe that immigrants are bad for the nation, this article shows us why immigrants can be good - from an economic view that is. Allowing immigrants to move into the country produce more jobs which in turn encourages business activity and also immigrant labor is definitely cheaper. The immigrants can take away all the low-skilled jobs with low wages such as taxi driver while non-immigrant workers can take advantage of jobs like being managers or supervisors. In my opinion, these immigrants help us more than we think. These immigrants create jobs and this helps increase tax revenue. Increasing tax revenue can help the country pay for the Social Security and also improve the business environment. I believe that immigrants our beneficial to our country in one way or other.

  2. Immigration does not hinder the economy as much as people make it seem. Immigrant workers may not demand as much as native workers would. They would not worry about a higher pay or vacation time; they want to work. Like the article said, 22% of Caribbean and Latin American immigrants left the workforce between 2007 and 2009 and it did not have a huge impact on American imployment. A lot of immigrants take the lower paying jobs. This may affect summer jobs for high-schoolers and it may affect the starting jobs Americans need to get better jobs. Still, it does not affect Americans so much. What really hurts the employment rate in the U.S. is when companies expand over seas. Many Americans would not go over seas to obtain a job like immigrants would to obtain a job in the U.S. These immigrants shop from the companies in the U.S. and expand the economy. They are an aid to the economy and to the higher workforce in the U.S. They take on a lot of "complementary jobs." Rummesa was correct in saying that "immgrants are beneficial to our contry in one way or another" becuase even thought a lot of immigrants hold high paying jobs, others of them hold those jobs that allow people in the U.S. to open businesses and have people to work in them. They also allow those businesses to have people to have the managing jobs too.

  3. The article discusses the positive side of immigrants and how beneficial they are to America. Not only for Jobs but for taxes, social security and ect...Its also encouraging Americans to stop working against immigrants because they are more on our side rather than the offshore people.

This piece of writing talks about the positivity of immigration. The United States benefits from the immigration in many ways. The immigrants not only increase the labor force but also work at a lower wage. For instance young immigrants with low schooling levels take manually intensive construction jobs, the construction companies that employ them have opportunities to expand. This increases the demand for construction supervisors, coordinators and so on. Companies that require employees to engage in physical labor depend on immigrant workers since there are simply not enough United States citizens who are willing and able to take those jobs. As the American born workforce increased, average hourly earnings of production also rise. The immigration also increases the production. Let’s take Miami as an example; most of the businesses are for immigrants such as Chinese, Japanese, and Hispanic. The immigrants also increase the consumer demand which has a positive effect on taxes. The immigration reshapes both the demography and the economy of America.

This article reflects how immigrants help this country rather than affect the economy. A lot of people think that immigration is very unsatisfactory to this country because they take jobs from the native citizens. In reality most of the unskilled immigrants work in construction just for little wages helping most of the cities to grow and most of the Americans do not like those kind of jobs. Also, immigrants keep their money flowing throughout the country because they pay taxes, they buy cars, houses and it keeps the economy in movement. What really affects a country and its economy is when companies want to expand offshore because it decreases the jobs to those people who really need them. I as an immigrant know that a lot of companies in Miami have not closed yet because employers use immigrants to work for them for just little money and then they do not have to pay them any benifts. It helps employers because they keep producing items as well as the economy and immigrants. This article is very interesting and it shows all the positive ways in which immigration helps a country and its economy in one way or another.

  6. When companies have Immigrants right here in the United State to hire for low-wage jobs, they will not need to relocate offshore. This action will create more jobs not only for low-wage workers but also for many related personals which include high-skilled managers, technician repairmen and other qualified workers. Immigrants could increase tax revenue, help finance social security, bring new home buyers and improve the business environment. In addition, since they are living in the country, they will improve the economy by consuming local products like foods, clothes, cars…

  7. I think the actual issue isn't whether or not immigrants as a whole are bad for the economy, it is much more complicated as the article stated. First what most people are against is illegal immigration. With illegal immigration there are no tax revenues to collect, they get paid under the table. Also the reason why certain jobs became low-wage is because someone was willing to do it cheaper, and illegal immigrants did that en mass.If you look back a decade or two ago, before the "NO Child left behind era" plenty of Americans wanted those construction jobs, and the like it was a place to start out from. My question to some is how does a person become a manager without working up the ladder first. I think that quite a few american miss out on a valuable life experience when they have never held a "low-wage job." Lastly even though many native borns use the job thing as an excuse, the real issue is that immergrants legal and illegal change the viewscape of how we live. Not saying that it is bad or good, but it is scary. I didn't realize this until oneday someone visiting from another country asked me why I didn't speak spanish as if that was expected of me. Then I remeber trying to get a job in the area where I frequently hung out only for them look at me then say no, "you don't speak spanish." Immirgation is good, it promotes change and progress. It keeps fresh new ways of thinking coming in. However whenever anything changes to fast there are going to be people who will not be able to keep up. Now that will scare them, and then they will get angry. Then of course they will try to do something about it.
