What Do We Do About Our Local Government?

The Miami Herald's Sunday, October 10th's Opinion Page includes an editorial entitled "The real culprit: Miami-Dade charter" which addresses the problems we face in our local government and the petitions to recall not only Mayor Carlos Alvarez, but also five commissioners. After reading the editorial (see link above and below) summarize it; state something you find unusual about the status-quo and express your opinion regarding what should be done. Be ready to comment about it in class.

This article talks about a few problems that Miami dade has within the local government. It emphasizes that one person or even five is ot the sole reason why our needs in the community arent being met. The constitution needs to first change before our circumstances change. In the authors opinion we need to have better representation for the minotirity in order to ensure that every voice is heard. We also need to downsize the number of representatives that we have, in my opinion thirteen is in act too much for our countty. We need people that are really for the community and that actually know what the community needs instead of all these people that are out for their own interests. We will never feeel the good affects of our government if our government isnt working for us in oredr to achieve the things we need to make our city better. By putting the right represebtatives forth, we ensure that our voices are being heard. And if these reps are in fact paid fairly for what they do with proper election periods, they would reflect our needs better.
