Is Race Really a Privilege?"

Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitt writes, in his Sunday, March 25th column, that "White is not simply color, but privilege." After reading the piece (see link below) and summarizing it and stating your own opinion in the blog, be ready to discuss Pitt's views and your own in class for extra credit points.

  1. After readingn this passage it gives us something to think about which is true. Leanoard Pitts Jr. states that Race such as Black and White seperated itself because we allowed it to. if there were more people like the young man who didn't realize he was black until he was 10 everything probably would not be the same. In my opinion I feel that its not the color of our skin its that character of a person that makes them who they are starting from the holiest to the lowest scum bag on the street corner, just take a minute and close your eyes and picture the world with no color and ask yourself who's doing what(crime) if there is no color there to seperate the crowd. Black and white is not a race its a description just likke boy and girl..women and men..dogs and cats.

  2. I really think people are ridiculous these days and people don’t really think when they take actions to something and what happened yesterday with the young teenage boy that he got shot only because he was wearing a hoody and he was black and the man that shot him thought he looked suspicious. I think he didn’t have the right to pull the trigger he didn’t have the right to make a decision like that if the teenage boy did not insult him or gave him a right to do that. People now and days do not know how to think and they automatically make decisions that they shouldn’t do they do them without thinking. This world today and this country might have freedom but racism still exists in this world people judge automatically, the color of your skin does not define the person it does not define who the person is there’s so many stereotyping people in this world and I hate it because I think all humans look alike we might not have the same color of skin or come from the same place but God brought us to this world to share or different cultures and are different ways. We are equal and people should really look into that and stop judging and stereotyping and start thinking we are all one and everyone should be treated equally. Remember the color of your skin does not define the person you are.

  3. Mr. Pitts Jr. made an excellent article on a subject that is very difficult to put into a normal understanding. I am sadly disappointed by how Trayvon's family has reacted with the death of their son. It has become an issue based on racism instead of seeking justice. Pitts purposely focused on skin color because of commenting done that the man who killed the 17 yr old was Hispanic instead of white. In my opinion what has mostly brought difficulty to a union within the United States is the hated that many posses about racism. Being white in the United States is a privilege because that is the way we were raised here. It's sad.
