Can we afford to learn from Obama & put our family above our job?

New York Times reporter Sheryl Gay Solberg comments in the Sunday Styles section that President Obama breaks from important meetings to attend his daughters' recitals and spend time with family and his staff knows to schedule important meetins around his family's schedule. The Times mentions that while President Obama puts his family first, he expects his staff and others in Congress to put their job first. The article quotes Rahm Emanuel stelling President Obama that indeed his administration is "family-friendly to your family." Is his "family first" governing style commendable? Good for the country? Hypocritical? Does it send a positive message? Should other fathers learn from the President? Can other fathers afford to do what the President does?

  1. We can learn a lot from our president by not neglecting our family because of our jobs. He is a leader and therfore, setting a few examples for his cabinet members to follow. I do not think that he was neglecting his job as a president, but he was fulfilling his job as a father.

  3. Our children should always be priority, not because is a right, but because is our responsibility. This is the world's future we have in our hands, and hopefully we made a symbolic commitment to ourselves when we conceived them

Wwwooowwwzza! Where to begin. Well it is fabulous that Obama has found a balance between presidency, father, and husband. This balance shows many great qualities in him. It shows that he can properly prioritize ( showing that he has control not only of his schedual, but possibly even an internal priority to himself) , and it shows that he can depend on his family for affirmation, (which is emotionally healthy). These things show that our president is probably an internally happy man, which is important to the American citizen because he is the face of this country, but that might be why this article is so controversial. The face of a country can not be that of a hypocrites. I, as an associate of the company I am employed for know that I would not ask any of my employees to do something that I myself would not do. Many people have the false impression that the president is above the branches of the government. Hello time to take a government class people!!!!!! The citizen is above all government to start and the president should feel no power over any of his employees because they are citizens first and employees second. Therefore I disagree strongly that Obama does not give the same opportunity to employees under his pay role with out some type of compensation, such as longer vacations. Ashley Bermudez
