Does Migration Help or Hurt Countries?

The Dec/ 1st New York Times' Sunday Review section includes an article titled "How Migration Hurts Poor Countries" (see link: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/30/opinion/migration-hurts-the-homeland.html?ref=opinion&_r=0)).  Read the article, summarize it in the blog and state the author's and your views.  Be ready to discuss these in class before your classmates for extra credit.

  1. Paul Collier is showing the other side of migration, according to him unlimited amount of emigration hurt poor countries. We keep seeing educated people who leave their homeland to a richer one in order to fullfill their needs. He thinks high democracies should provide a refugee to talented people and let them get all the tools necessaries and then those people should go back home with valuable skills, social and political attitudes which is going to raise the productivity in their countries and at the same time their attitudes will accelerate democratization according to him. Its interesting to see the contrast between Mark Zuckerberg who advocates for a inmigration reform for those 11 million of undocumented people who had an American Dream. Those young people who came when they were at a early age and they dont have memories of living anywhere else and should have the same opportunities, according to him that is the human thing to do, on the contrary Paul refuses that statement when he said human to whom? he appeals more to logic, let's not forget those countries they left behind which it does make sense as well. Every time people is leaving their countries there is a impact on the economy, education and politics on a certain way. Opening doors for people would definitely help empire businesses such as facebook and improve United States economy but what about the bottom billion? what about all those countries that are getting poorer and poorer. I do agree with the author and even with Mark Zuckenberg, it all depends the way you want to see things, in a individualistic(Mark) or collectivistic (Paul) perspective but let´s get this straight; it is already happening what Paul wants, people leave their countries, study and then go back to rebuild it but this is just happening to the rich ones, to that vicious circle that keeps the power because they know when they come back the government would fullfill their necessities, anyway, their families are the government. There should not be a urge to leave our homelands, government should assure their citizens education and opportunities in order to not look for them somewhere else.

  2. One fact from that article that really popped out to me was the fact that young people leave their countries in order to get higher education and then go back and spread what they learned across the country. I think that it is a great way to make the poorer less fortunate countries better and more informed on how to make their countries better. I also like the view of mark because he believes that giving people from other countries the right to stay here is the right thing to do and it is. In my opinion everyone deserves the right to live like we do simple as that. No one should be deprived of the right to live how we do. Making other countries better is what America prides itself on and this is a great way to do it.

  3. I'm totally in favor of Paul Collier i can relate to his opinion in so many ways. I was born in America, of Haitian descent, also spent most of my childhood living in Haiti. Majority of Haitian population living on island is illiterate and majority ones that are educated or have a somewhat stable financially are on a constant look out for opportunities to leave not to ever return, same goes for their children. Which leaves the country in long lasting down fall with people that can't even read and write their own names with no one to guide them. So to me shipping back young educated Haitians or any third world countries citizens isn't bad at all, not even remotely. Now I understand there's people that are brought here young and the American life is all they know but that's not who are. You have an identity, one that can be found helping your fellow patriots. If anybody that's currently in this situation or can relate to this I don't see a reson on why you should disagree with me, unless you one of those that are selfish and the advancement of your own people means nothing.
