Problems with Education? What can be done?

In “Sorry, teachers: Bailout cupboard is bare” The Miami Herald quotes Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stating that his office will attempt to protect “teachers and educational programs” by – among other things – “containing costs, renegotiating contracts and imposing a 27 percent reduction in the central office…” the article also addresses other federal expenditures that are increasing the deficit and negatively affecting education. In “Keep Florida’s educators working,” also in The Herald’s “Other Views’” section, Secretary Arne Duncan expresses his views regarding how to weather the storm by saying: “We should be educating our way to a better economy.” After reading the articles, comment about the problem, possible solutions, repercussions and possible reasons for our conundrum.

  1. Cutting back on the number of teachers in the public education system is unrealistic, because less teachers would mean an increase in class sizes. Managing an average classroom is an everyday challenge, i can only wonder what will happen when that size doubles. Though the bailouts for Wall Street and our auto industry were necessary, the bailout for our education system should have been the first one to be approved. While our economy is suffering, neglecting the education of our youth will only become a long term problem. With less educated people governing our country, not only could that bring upon another recession but the international professionals with better educated background would be the ones running corporate America. Investing in our children is a long term goal, but one that would greatly benefit our nation.

  2. it's not logical to see how the education system its been neglected.Washington don't really think about the future of the children by acting this way .they should spend more on education.stop cutting the school budget.

  3. Education is the base of a society.Everybody need to go to school .Cutting the school budget ,while spending on wall street and auto industry make me feel unsecured about the education of my little brothers and the future childrens growing up.If they want a real future for the country they need to invest on education by paying the teachers and create new educational programs in schools and there will be a better future for the next generations.
